Congratulations to Liz Taranda PDF Print E-mail

The Clifton Animal Shelter will undergo a $25,000 facelift with winnings from the Purina Cat Chow contest. Clifton shelter volunteer Vice President Liz Taranda, above left, won the Volunteer of the Year award which came with a $25,000 prize. Taranda was nominated by volunteer shelter President Evelyn Ackley-Raps, above right.

Taranda was nominated as Volunteer of the Year for New Jersey in Purina Cat Chow's Building Better Lives contest. From Feb. 23 through March 15, the public was asked to vote for the volunteer of the year from a pool of 50. Each volunteer represented a different shelter in each state.

Clifton shelter volunteer Vice President Liz Taranda, above left, won the Volunteer of the Year award which came with a $25,000 prize. Taranda was nominated by volunteer shelter President Evelyn Ackley-Raps, above right.

More than 272,000 votes were cast nationwide during the voting weeks and Taranda was the winner by popular vote and by a panel of judges.

"It's a big moment. We're still soaking it in," said Taranda.

Taranda, the shelter's volunteer vice president, was nominated for the contest by co-volunteer and President of the Shelter Evelyn Ackley-Raps.

The duo learned of the contest's results for six weeks, they said, but were not allowed to share the good news until now.

Taranda and Ackley-Raps said they received a call from Purina shortly after voting closed. When Purina delivered the good news, Ackley-Raps said she was screaming in excitement, while Taranda sat stunned before tearing up.

They had to calm down and call Purina back to iron out the details, she said.

"Her commitment to the Clifton Animal Shelter is unwavering. She truly cares about every cat that the organization supports," wrote Randy Beck, Purina Cat Chow brand director, in a press release.

Taranda has provided care and coordinated cat adoptions for 12 years. She handles emails, interviews, coordinates volunteers, arranges foster homes, and maintains the shelter's online pet listings. She also handles the day-to-day for the cats, including feeding and play.

Documents provided by Purina said Taranda was chosen because of her dedication to abandoned, senior, and ill cats, and her ability to find homes for hard-cases.
